The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a reorganization plan in January 2023 to create a unified Human Foods Program and restructure field operations. This plan, approved in May 2024 and implemented today, aims to prioritize nutrition, reduce diet-related diseases, strengthen state partnerships, and embrace innovative food and agriculture technologies for better regulation of the nation’s food supply. The FDA’s response to an infant formula shortage in 2022 prompted this program. Under the reorganization, the Human Foods program will assume the roles of the Center for Food safety and Applied Nutrition, the Office of Food and Policy Response, and the Office of Regulatory Affairs, which is now called the Office of Inspections and Investigations. Companies can expect increased enforcement of the Food safety Modernization Act to prevent foodborne outbreaks and enhance regulation in the industry. There will be more thorough inspections for large consumer packaged goods (CPGs) and food retailers. The FDA will request specific information from companies regarding imported products to ensure compliance with regulations.
