Sperri, a Canadian organic and allergen-free plant-based meal replacement beverage, has announced a new investment to support its expansion into the United States and drive new product innovation. This investment is led by investor Nàdarra Ventures and supported by Invest Nova Scotia.

Sperri, a company based in Halifax, is revolutionizing the food and beverage industry with its philosophy that food is medicine. Co-founders Gregg Curwin, President & CEO of Novagevity, and Dr. Mary Lynch, a physician and pain management specialist, have come together to combine science and innovation to meet the nutritional needs of consumers.

Dr. Lynch noticed that many of her patients needed meal replacements for proper nutrition but struggled with existing options due to high levels of processed sugars, dairy, gluten, and soy protein. Collaborating with Curwin, an experienced entrepreneur, Sperri was created with the goal of helping people improve and maintain their health.

“Our products are based on scientific research that leads to effective medical nutrition, and the philosophy of Sperri is to inspire change in our traditional healthcare systems,” says Curwin. “We believe that food is medicine, and the need for this is greater than ever, not just for Nova Scotians, but for everyone in North America. Sperri products are designed to be accessible, affordable, and effective, providing a significant benefit to primary care treatment during a time when there is an urgent need to alleviate pressure on our healthcare system.”

Founded at the Sobey School of Business at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Sperri has strong ties to Nova Scotia, with the name of the beverage inspired by Sperry Beach on the province’s South Shore. Sperri has received tremendous local support, with independent NS investors, industry executives, and members of the pharmaceutical industry participating in the funding round, along with Invest Nova Scotia and Nàdarra Ventures.

Nàdarra Ventures, a Canadian early-stage venture capital fund specializing in accelerating sustainable biotechnology in agriculture, food, and materials, is the primary investor for Sperri’s entry into the US market.

Invest Nova Scotia, the province’s business development agency, is also backing Sperri’s expansion into the US market alongside lead investor Nàdarra Ventures. Invest Nova Scotia offers capital, export services, and resources to help startups succeed, including The Labs at Invest Nova Scotia, where Novagevity operates.
