Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş stated on Monday that Israel’s uncontrolled aggression towards Lebanon is escalating the region towards war and needs to stop.
During a consultation meeting of the Parliamentary Union of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Switzerland, Kurtulmuş emphasized the need for an end to Israel’s “genocidal war” against Palestinians.
“We are witnessing a long-standing occupation, violence, and the denial of basic rights,” Kurtulmuş remarked.
“The occupation and colonization of Palestinian territories must cease. All hostages and detainees must be freed. Humanitarian assistance must be ensured. International Court of Justice (ICJ) decisions must be followed,” Kurtulmuş outlined.
“The OIC’s Parliamentary Union should endorse these principles and communicate a strong message against Israel’s oppressive occupation, advocating for peace and a two-state solution,” he added, urging the union not to overlook the issue for the third time.
South Africa brought a case against Israel to the International Court of Justice in late 2023, accusing Israel of violating the 1948 Genocide Convention by bombing Gaza since October.
Local health authorities report that over 42,000 individuals, mostly women and children, have been killed, and more than 97,700 others have been injured as a result.
The Israeli attacks have displaced nearly the entire population of Gaza, exacerbating food, water, and medicine shortages due to the ongoing blockade.
In May, the court ordered Israel to stop its offensive in the southern Gaza city of Rafah. This marked the third time that the panel of 15 judges issued preliminary orders to reduce the death toll and alleviate humanitarian crises in the blockaded enclave.
Despite ICJ rulings and a U.N. Security Council resolution urging an immediate cease-fire, Israel has persisted in its brutal offensive against the Gaza Strip.
