Billionaire John Paul DeJoria, the founder of Patrón Tequila, has acquired Waterloo Gin, the first gin brand to be distilled in Texas. The purchase price remains undisclosed. Waterloo Gin is known for its flagship No. 9 Gin, which combines fruits and botanicals, as well as its Antique Gin, aged in white oak barrels for two years.
The acquisition by DeJoria is expected to help Waterloo Gin expand nationally with his industry expertise. The brand will undergo a brand refresh and increase its distribution across the country in the coming year. Justin Meigs, formerly of Empress Gin, will lead the brand.
DeJoria, who previously founded Patrón Tequila and Paul Mitchell hair care, sees great potential in Waterloo Gin. The gin market in the U.S. is experiencing growth, with premium offerings like Bombay Sapphire and Hendrick’s gaining popularity.
According to Nielsen data, premium gin has seen faster growth than whiskey, vodka, and rum in recent years. Waterloo Gin’s acquisition by DeJoria aims to capitalize on this trend and bring the brand to a wider audience.
